Boy, I sure do love breakfast sandwiches!

Yes the above statement is true — I love breakfast sandwiches — ones that include eggs, cheese, pork-roll, bacon, or even if I feel brave I might even try scrapple. Take out a english muffin, an egg and some breakfast meat and fry it up. It tastes great but I still don’t know how I end up with some many dirty utensils and pans for one sandwich!

While in a major retail store I came across the Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich Maker and thought it looked pretty neat and not expensive at all — but I did feel it was a little gimmicky. I can make a breakfast sandwich in 5-mins — hmm I had to give this product a try.

Design, Setup, & Usability

The design of the Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich maker is compact and small enough that anyone can easily store it or even leave it out. It’s about as wide as a decent size bagel and maybe like 8 inches tall.

I read through the instructions and the quick-start guide and I was a little confused at first and jumped online to watch a quick demo of someone using one.  Made a lot more sense after that.  Using the machine was pretty straight forward but I failed on my first two attempts at making the sandwiches.  The first attempt I put in two medium eggs when you are really only supposed to use one and my second attempt I did not let it cook long enough and when I move the egg it was one gooey mess.  These incidents were not the fault of the machine — more the fault of the users.

Using the appliance is pretty straight forward, turn it on, let it heat up until the ready light comes on and then open it up. Place the bottom half of the english muffn, some cheese, which I folded to fit and not make a mess, pre-cooked breakfast meat (since it will not really cook the meat — just heat it), close the first chamber and then place the egg, and muffin top and close the lid.  Don’t press down on the lid — just gently put it down and let it cook. for about 5-minutes.

Nothing spectacular really happens during the five minutes except for you breakfast sandwich being cooked. After five minutes you use the egg slider to drop it down on top of the meat, cheese and bottom half of the english muffin. Then open the lid, slide it off and you’re ready to eat.

Being that all the cooking surface are non-stick clean up was a breeze — pretty much just a slightly damp paper-towel worked.  Also remember you don’t want to scratch the non-stick surface so don’t use a metal spatula to remove your sandwich.

The Conclusion

Besides my two idiotic fails the first times around the Hamilton Beach breakfast Sandwich maker performed just as it stated on the box.  Now I do like two eggs and this really won’t work with the machine — maybe if you let it cook a little longer and I was hoping that it would cook the breakfast meats not just heat them — but I don’t think that would happen with-in five minutes and you would end up burning everything else on the sandwich — so pre-cooked meats it is.

Also, keep in mind that the box states “in five minutes” but that does not include the few minutes it take to warm up — you can’t hold this against the machine as even a frying pan needs a few mins to warm up. Overall maybe it took me a total of 8 minutes from warm up to plating my sandwich with a lot let mess to clean up in the end.

One complaint from my wife and son was that it did not handle boxed egg-whites that well ,which it does mention on the box that boxed egg-whites are not recommended. So if you like egg whites you will just have to use a real egg and separate it which would take you about 10 seconds.

Overall I really enjoyed using the Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich maker and recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good breakfast sandwich in the morning on a small bagel or English muffin. It’s easy and pretty much set and forget while it cooks.

Update 3/4/2014
I have found for even better results cooking the egg is to spray the egg cooking plate with non-stick spray like PAM. The egg comes clean off the cooking plate and seems to yield better results.
