Kelly Clarkson Piece By Piece Concert Review
Sure Kelly Clarkson did sing my wife and I’s wedding song.. well not in person.. although that would have been really awesome. Most of my music falls into the hard rock genre but I have always been a fan of Clarkson’s music not to mention my wife’s stunning resemblance to Kelly in the “Since You Been Gone Video”.
Kelly stopped in New Jersey on July 14th at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel while on her Piece by Piece tour. Opening act for the night was Eric Hutchinson who is an American Singer-Songwriter and while had a lighter rock sound thought was very good and could easily be compared with artists like Jason Mraz and Ben Folds Five. Eric played the crowd well and even mentioned that he would be doing a meet and greet after his performance.
The next act was the, apparently extremely popular, a cappella group Pentatonix or known online as PTX. I have not heard of this group prior to the show but they were pretty amazing. I think the only other a cappella group that I listed too was the one group from Carmen SanDiego TV show…this was way better. Consisting of five vocalists originating from Arlington, Texas they performed songs that included Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”, Telephone, and a Michael Jackson Medley. After the show I did check out a few of their music videos including the “Evolution of Music” and still think they are a really cool group and one to check out for sure.
Headlining the show was of course, Kelly Clarkson. The crowd filled with fans of all ages from little girls with their moms and dads to much older true fans.. .even ones that you would not expect to see.. such as an Iron Maiden shirt in the crowd. Kelly came out to open with “Dance with Me” — and right off the bat you can see how much of a real person she is. Waiving to the audience, shaking hands, and even taking flowers from fans as she performed which went on much of the show.. and she performed the whole show with no shoes!! Her show was great and included many songs and hits that you could clearly see every loved. Clarkson stage did seem like an over the top type production with light shows and massive moving video monitors which made it feel like it was a big American Idol production.. but it all worked.
At one point Pentatonix joined Kelly on Stage for a performance and during her a mashup of Walk Away and UpTown Funk brought her stepson Seth out to perform with her which he seemed to love. For someone that is a fan of harder rock music I must say that I did enjoy the show and the crowd did not seem to be disappointed. Thankfully the skies cleared for the lawn seats despite still having to deal with the heat and humidity which lasted through out the night and even Kelly mentioned at one point she would not be wearing a specific outfit any more while on tour as it was too hot.
After an 18+ song set which of course included “heartbeat song” Kelly came back for an encore and wrapped up with Bang Bang (Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj cover), Miss Independent and closed out with Since U Been Gone. Kelly was right on key through-out the show and it was one show that I would recommend checking out as I’m pretty sure you would enjoy.. even if you know just a few tracks.
